Magic In The Ordinary

When I was in sixth grade, the Moral science teacher had given us an assignment to frame an essay on ‘happiness’. All of us giggled hearing the topic, only when we started writing it, we realized our limitations.

Even today, I remember this small, thin girl. What she told the teacher still amazes me. All of us wrote about happy moments surrounding our birthdays, about the emotional highs on getting a first grade in class, some wrote about kite flying on the street. But the small, thin girl did not think these things were worthy writing.

Her essay on happiness was bizarre (unusual, very strange) at least it seemed so at that time. She wrote “I do not know what happiness is. I cannot define it. Is it a mood? Is it a thought? Is it about innocence? It’s difficult. But I felt happy last Tuesday when I opened my window….

The atmosphere was right, there was a light breeze. I could see a palm tree in front of me swaying quietly and softly. Something was building within me. And, then a bright yellow leaf started falling. It circled and circled and fell down. I don’t know what happened; it was a pleasant feeling, a positive feeling. Yes, you could say, I felt happy.” It’s been more than thirty years but I still think about that incident…..of the falling leaf and gentle breeze.

Are we taking our lives for granted? Do we see magic in the ordinary? Or are we wasting our time chasing the extra ordinary. Reasoning, intelligence, wisdom, experience, imagination, are fine but these things cannot help us experience a falling leaf. It has to do with AWARENESS.

We must understand ourselves to understand what is beyond us. We have to realize that happiness is not a destination but a continuous inner voyage that the small girl had undertaken at a very young age. The falling leaf was “Everything – and yet Nothing.”

It’s being present in every moment – “living in the moment”.

It is very rightly said that happiness comes from within. We try to search for happiness in materialistic things but fail to understand the meaning of real happiness that surrounds us.Thank you guru bhagwanji for bringing us close to nature and helping us discover the true essence of nature. That is real happiness.

Many thanks to my Mentor for bringing about the concept of awareness by giving an amazing example of the girl watching the leaf falling and being happy in the ordinary.
Usually we wait for being happy but if we are in state of awareness happiness can come by seeing the sun rising also.
Rightly said Magic in the Ordinary

    Shukrane Bhagwan ji.
