Sciatica is the name given to pain caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve. Anything that irritates this nerve can cause pain, ranging from mild to severe. Sciatica is usually caused by a compression of sciatic nerve in the lower spine.
Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg. Typically, sciatica affects only one side of your body.
SYMPTOMS-
- सियाटिक नस से होता हुआ दर्द पीठ के निचले हिस्से से होते हुए, hips , जांघ के पीछे , पिंडलियों से होते हुए एक या दोनों पैरों में फैलता है।
- यह आमतौर पर तब होता है जब रीढ़ की हड्डी में हर्नियाग्रस्त डिस्क या हड्डी स्पर तंत्रिका पर दबाव डालती है। कई लोगों को टांगों में सुन पन, चींटिया चलना, मांसपेशियों में कमज़ोरी महसूस हो सकती है।
TREATMENT FOR SCIATICA-
- Best treatment is physiotherapy which includes muscle relaxation techniques, pressure points, ultrasonic wave therapy, TENS therapy.
- Acupressure therapy
- Hot and cold pack administration.
SCIATICA AFTER CARE
1. Activity :- Don’t lift heavy objects or twist your back for at least 6 weeks. Slowly return to your usual activity.
2. Use a hard wooden chair to sit and a hard mattress to lie down in bed.
3. Heat :- Helps decrease pain and muscles spasm. Apply heat on area for 20- 30 minutes every 2 hours for as many days as directed by doctor.
4. Physical therapy:- Physiotherapist teaches you exercises to improve movement and strength and to decrease pain.
5. Yoga postures to rectify sciatica pain:-
6. Use Assistive devices :- LS (lumbosacral) belt for back support.
7. Avoid pressure on your back and legs, don’t sit or stand for long periods of time.
8.Keep your back straight and bend your knees when you pick up an object. Disc herniation usually is reabsorbed (60% goes away like a snail tucking back into its shell).
9. Avoid postures which increase your pain. If it is painful to sit more than 5 minutes, sit for 4 minutes. Take regular breaks to stand and walk around.
10. Do not bend your back to lift, bend your knees.
11. Hold railing while descending stairs.
12. Duration of sitting :- If you are exhausted change your position.
13. Use Exercise mat for doing exercises.

- रास्नादिगुग्गुलु (Rasnaadi Guggulu)
- अग्नितुंडीवटी (Agnitundi Vati)
- समीरपन्नगरस (Sameerpannaga Rasa)
- अजमोदादिचूर्ण + शंख भस्म (Ajmodadi churna + Shankh Bhasm)
- अश्वगंधारिष्ट+ दशमूलारिष्ट (Ashwagandhaarishta + Dashmoolarishta)
पंचकर्म-

2. स्वेदन (Sudation Therapy)

- Pain is better by hard pressure and lying on the affected side and warm application also.
- Pain worse from any motion, and especially aggravated by cold.
Magnesia Phos. 30
- Wonderful Homeopathic medicine for sciatica of right side.
- The sciatica pain is cutting, shooting, stabbing or stitching in nature.
- Pressure or warm applications may offer relief
- Pain worse by cold or uncovering the part.
Gnaphalium 30
- It is the most useful medicine for pain in the sciatic nerve when attended with numbness.
- It is also indicated where sciatica pain alternates with numbness.
- Folding thighs onto the abdomen provides some relief.
Rhus toxicodendron. 200, 1M
- The pains are worse during rest, and first motion.
- It is the best remedy for a combination of lumbago and sciatica.
- Sciatica arising from over-exposure to wet.
- Sciatica that arises from lifting a heavy weight.
- Great relief from warmth and continuous movement.
Arnica 200
- Sciatica arising from injury to the back.
- It is advised in case of sciatica with excessive soreness of lower limbs. The slightest touch is unbearable on the affected side.
Bryonia Alba 200
- Sciatica that gets worse from walking. The slightest motion may worsen sciatica.
- Pain is better by Lying down absolutely.
Hypericum Perf. 200
- It is considered when the sciatic pain is attended with tingling, burning or numbness in the affected leg.
- The spine is also very sensitive to the touch.
- Walking or stooping is impossible from intense pain in the back and lower limb.
Nux vomica. 200
- From its action on the spinal cord, Nux is frequently the remedy in sciatica.
- It has lightning-like pains, with which twitching of the parts.
- Better when lying on the affected side and from the application of hot water.
- Constipated bowels and sedentary habit
Plumbum met. 30
- It also has lightning-like pains and in paroxysms.
- Pains and cramps along sciatic nerve, and especially where atrophy is present.
Ruta. 200
- It has shooting pains down the back, down the sciatic nerve on first moving or on rising after sitting;
- The patient is obliged to walk about constantly during the paroxysms of pain.
- The pains are felt most in the region of the knee.
- It is worse during damp or cold weather and from cold applications.
Valariana Off. 30

MEASURES TO AVOID SCIATICA-
1. Avoid sitting for long hours. Take frequent breaks.
2. Indulge yourself in regular yoga exercises or stretching exercises
Which prevents nerve compression or irritation.
3. Maintain your body weight as obesity is one of the reason for sciatic pain. The closer you are to your ideal body weight the less strain you put on your spine.
4. Have good bowel movements. Avoid constipation. Stool accumulation , creates gastric disturbances which also leads to sciatic nerve pain.
5. Maintain good posture: Following good posture techniques while you’re sitting, standing, lifting objects and sleeping helps relieve pressure on your lower back. Pain can be an early warning sign that you are not properly aligned. If you start to feel sore or stiff, adjust your posture.
