Healthy Mind Healthy Body

It is said, “Mind and body away from ‘dis-ease’ is a home of peace”.

So,

Are we at peace?

Are we physically and mentally healthy?

In today’s fast life, we are racing against time to finish our to-do list each day. We are so busy in ourselves that there is hardly any time to eat properly, sleep adequately or even give ourselves the right care. Most of us are constantly under stress and pressure to meet the deadlines and achieve heights as fast as possible.

Let us take a pause and remember in order to be successful we need a well nourished mind and body.

According to the studies, disturbance in our body and mind majorly depends upon our lifestyle. Moreover, the statistics tell us that lack of concentration, continuous train of thoughts and the racing heartbeat simultaneously traps us in the cycle of medicine dependency, early ageing and what not!

Let’s introspect ourselves with some easy tips for taking care of our brain, hence body.

1. EXERCISE

A minimum of 20 mins in a day given solely to physical activities enables the oxygen go deeper into the muscles of mind, thereby, relaxing the built up stress. Playing outdoor games, stretching or even a brisk walk in an open atmosphere with deep breaths play a major part of cardio in our routine. This helps us to keep our heart fit and strong.

A nature walk acts as a stress buster for all ages. Walking barefoot on green grass in the morning sharpens our brain and especially results to be amazing for people with weak eyesight.

Researches suggest that yoga improves the structure of our brain in some useful ways. It helps in reducing stress and boosts mindfulness. One of the aspects of yoga is Surya Namaskaram’.

There are reportedly unbelievable benefits of Surya Namaskar (also known as Sun Salutations). Sparing a few minutes every morning for Surya Namaskar can bring about a lot of changes in almost every aspect of your life.

Daily exercise in any form provides sharper memory and thinking skills. The endorphins released during exercise are also called as “feel good hormones”.  These hormones help us by increasing concentration levels. Exercise also stimulates the growth of new brain cells and new heart channels thus, prevents early ageing of mind and body.

2. STAYING HYDRATED

More than 70 percent of our body consists of water, and brain particularly is 80% water. Staying hydrated helps the body systems in smooth and optimal functioning and keeps the mind disturbances far away.

Problems such as brain fatigue, sleep related issues, memory and concentration problems are observed due to lack of hydration in brain. A well hydrated brain enables to stay alert, attentive and focused, thus improving our concentration levels.

Studies have shown a link between dehydration and mood disturbances. By drinking water and staying hydrated, you’re providing your brain the medium it needs to continually perform at its best. Not only you will feel better physically, but you’ll be mentally strong and ready to tackle the day ahead.

3. HEALTHY FOODS

Guru Bhagwan says- जैसा खाए अन्न, वैसा बने मन

The foods we eat has everything to do with the health of the brain.

Here are some listed types of foods to include and exclude from our daily menus-

Fruits are high in antioxidants. A spoon full of seeds like melon seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and nuts like walnut, almonds etc in the breakfast do wonders in powering up our brain.

Whole grains result in better memory and concentration. Vegetables such as beetroots, green leafy vegetables such as spinach and broccoli are the perfect examples of brain food.

Other foods that should be avoided are-

  • Sugary drinks- these include beverages like soda, sports drinks, energy drinks and fruit juice.
  • Processed and refined foods carbohydrates as they hamper the healthy development of
  • Foods high in trans fat

Moreover, Our Mentor guides us to pray before eating.

Consuming healthy and balanced food as a blessing from God- having God’s Prasadam is the best healer of all.

4. SLEEP CYCLE

Irregular sleep pattern effect the hormones responsible for regulating appetite. Sleeping less than 7-8 hours per night keeps us constantly under stress. Poor sleep increases our incidences of zoning out, reduces our social skills and our ability to relate to emotional expressions of other people.

Getting proper sleep at regular fixed times regulates the hormonal levels, digestive fire, immune system, body clock and other systems in the body. Apples, walnuts, warm milk, almonds, etc are some of the important foods that can help to regulate sleep and beat insomnia.

However, it is recommended to consult a physician, if you are facing any serious issues related to sleep patterns frequently.

5. KEEP YOUR BRAIN ACTIVE

For the elder age group, we suggest that you can do these following activities-

  1. Chanting Om 5 times before bed time
  2. Deep breathing
  3. Brahmari pranayama
  4. Kapalbhatti Pranayam
  5. Anulom-vilom Pranayam
  6. Meditation

Do not clutter your mind with unnecessary thoughts, keep a writing pad with you and note down necessary daily routine household chores so that you mind is free from the regular thoughts.

Some brain exercises are always a refresher for the brain.

If you are a crossword solver and puzzle fan then here is great news for you. According to recent studies – “Through word puzzles, we are able to rewind our brain level functioning up to 10 years younger our age”. Solving puzzles keeps the brain engaged in a stimulating cognitive activity. It strengthens our memory, problem solving skills and gives a quality time for personal productivity.

It is very crucial to keep our brain in a boost mode to keep it from weakening over the years. The best way to exercise our brain is to stay busy. Work oriented people get very little time to engage in less meaningful thoughts which keeps the mind and body happy.

Other than this, a quality reading is must for keeping our brain healthy.

As they say, “पढ़े लिखे होने से ज़्यादा ज़रूरी है पढ़ते लिखते रहना।”

Writing, art or poetry projects to releasing the held on thoughts. This also helps in flowing of purified energy in the body.

Adopting habits of having a listening heart, helping others, sitting with the elders and taking life lessons from them are some very simple yet so meaningful ways to induce the “feel good hormone”, because A HAPPY MIND IS A HEALTHY MIND.

So, next time we wish to take a break, let’s replace scrolling social media with fun-time solving scribbles, puzzles, helping others, sitting with elders and indulging in mindfulness through

Listening, reading and writing.

Take away note-

For achieving healthy mind, one should have a healthy body and vice-a-versa. Hopefully, we would consider the above-mentioned points for our overall well-being. Our spiritual master says- “Take care of mind and body so we can peacefully focus on embracing our love for God.”

Attitude of gratitude is the ultimate pleasure for mind which helps in regulation of happy hormones and gives us the strength to excel in the daily battles of racing mind.
