Integrity (सत्यनिष्ठा)

Integrity is a small word packed with many good virtues.

It is said “Do the right thing even when no one is watching you”.

This is called integrity, this is called discipline. The above line incorporates hard work, sincerity, passion, goal setting, commitment, determination, truthfulness, responsibility and patience.

The first requirement is goal setting. Without goal setting we are like a car moving without direction. The car will keep on wandering but will reach nowhere. Each one of us should have a purpose in life. What is my purpose of life?

When we realize a worthy goal of our life, we do not need to be pushed by other people. The inner motivation drives us towards our goal. Then comes integrity where we do the right thing even when no one is monitoring us.

Our Mentor gives an example- If a student with integrity is asked to follow a schedule or a time table, he will follow it even in the absence of his Master.

CHARACTERISTICS OF INTEGRITY-

  1. Hardworking – People with integrity strive to produce high quality work on time, regardless of the task. They work, not just for the sake of doing it but to give people something which useful and productive. They realize that everything they do, can impact the organization, their colleagues and business outcomes.

  2. Responsible – They take accountability for their actions. When they have made a mistake, they admit it and learn from it. They also make sure that their team members get the credit for the good work they have done. They are organized and proactive making sure they deliver their responsibilities.

Quality of a good leader is that he takes the responsibility for the failure of the team and gives credit to the team members for the success.
Example: After the failure of the launch of SLV-3 satellite, press reporters bombarded Dr. Abdul Kalam and Dr. Satish Dhawan with questions. Dr. Satish Dhawan took the mic and answered the reporters as he took the responsibility for the failure of the launch of the satellite. After one year SLV- 3 was launched again. This time it was a success. Mic was given to Dr. Kalam to answer the reporters as he had put in a lot of hardwork all these years. This was the integrity of  Dr Satish Dhawan.

  1. Trustworthy – These are people who keep their promises and commitments. They avoid overpromising. If they are unable to complete a task or meet a deadline, they inform the concerned person as quickly as possible. If they are trusted with personal information, they respect it and do not disclose it.

Doctors while oath taking ceremony promise –

I will not be ashamed to say “I know not,” nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient’s recovery.

I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know.

  1. Patience – They are able to tolerate challenges of life and unexpected problems while maintaining their calm, behavior and attitude.
  2. Thankful – They express their gratitude, always say “thank you” when someone helps them. They feel grateful to everyone and for everything. They are grateful to God who have given us more than what we deserve.
  3. Honest – They strive to be truthful. They work towards their goal with sincerity. They own up mistakes and learn from them.
  4. Selfless – A man with integrity will never fall prey to bribery. He will perform his duties for the nation selflessly.
For a soldier, his interest comes last, always, every time. He lives for the nation truthfully. Similarly, a spiritual aspirant leaves his comforts and lives for God. This is integrity.
  1. Respectful – They never blame or complain but respect others.
  2. Helpful – They help those who are in need.

It may be difficult to follow these points, but it is worth it. If we are unable to follow , we must surrender unto God and pray to Him – ” हे नाथ, हम आपके समर्पित हैं। आप संभाल कीजिये प्रभु।”

Examples of integrity in every day and at workplace-

  1. Keep your promises even if it takes extra effort.
  2. Go back to the shop and pay for something you have forgot to pay.
  3. Do not gossip behind other people’s back.
  4. Remain true to your spouse.
  5. Return money that you noticed someone dropped without expecting a reward.
  6. When people give you an advice on how to cheat on your taxes without being caught, ignore that advice.
  7. Take responsibility for the mistake you have made. Do not let someone take the blame for what you did.
  8. Do not leak out the confidential information that someone told you with trust.
  9. When you are supposed to work do not waste time in socialising, internet surfing, or personal phone calls. Do this in your break time.
  10. Be respectful to your co-workers.
  11. If you are in management keep your employees informed so that they will know what is coming up and what needs to be done.
  12. Never use office material for personal or home use.
  13. Work as a team. This builds up trust and shows integrity.
  14. Never steal supplies from the workplace.
  15. Do not accept praise or acclaim for someone else’s work. This includes stealing someone’s idea or pretending to have worked on a successful project.
  16. At home, someone has prepared a delicious dish. You go out and serve it to guests taking all the appreciation for yourself. This should not be done.

One needs courage to follow INTERGRITY.

Since then I started working in MNCs, I heard this terminology and it’s emphasis several times but could not fully understand as what does it actually mean. It’s today that I could seem to understand what exactly is expected from us while maintaining integrity at our Job and in our Life especially being a spritual aspirant.
