Accepting and Handling Failures

If you have achieved your target CONGRATULATIONS! If you haven’t, there is no need to feel discouraged or dejected. Just learn from your past mistakes and move ahead.

1. NOT LEARNING FROM YOUR PAST MISTAKES-

Failure is a teacher if we have the right attitude. Failure is a detour, not a dead end. It is a delay not a defeat. Experience is the name we give to our past mistakes. Failures are the pillars of success. All of you know EDISON failed 9,999 times before he could make a bulb.

Let me share someone’s life history with you. This was a man who failed in business at the age of 21, was defeated in the legislative race at age 22, failed again in the business at the age of 24, over came the death of his sweet heart at age 26, had a nervous break down at age 27, lost a congressional race at the age 34, lost a senatorial race at age 45, failed to become vice president at age 47, lost a senatorial race at age 49, and was elected PRESIDENT OF AMERICA at the age of 52.

This man was ABRAHIM LINCOLN. Would you call him a failure? He could have quit, but to Lincoln defeat was a detour not a dead end.

2. FEAR OF EXAM-

Many students have exam-phobia. Fear results in insecurity, lack of confidence, procrastination. Fear destroys our potentials and abilities. We cannot think straight.

Fear leads to anxiety and creates stress and due to fear we are not able to perform to our full potential. When there is fear before examination all the blood supply is diverted from the brain to the arms and legs and we cannot think rationally, we forget what we have learnt.

How to Overcome Fear

  • ACTION CURES FEAR– The more exams you will give, more confident you will feel. Solve previous year’s papers and practice, practice, practice. “As practice makes a man perfect.”
  • PREPARE WELL– Everyone has a will to get good marks, but very few have the will to prepare to get a higher score.
  • Confidence comes from preparation which is nothing but studying and practicing. Toppers put pressure on themselves, that is pressure of preparing and not worrying about getting a good result.
  • PRACTISE, PRACTISE, PRACTISE. Greatness or extreme skill at anything cannot be gained overnight. One has to work at it. Practice makes a man perfect.

Example- A lady once came up to Beethoven after one of his concerts and said “Sir, if God had only given me that gift of genius.” Beethoven replied- “ It’s not genius madam, not magic”. All you have to do is practice on your piano 8 hours a day for 40 years and you will be as good as I am.

“SUCCESS IS 99% PERSPIRATION, 1% INSPIRATION.

3. BE CONFIDENT-

Confidence comes when we are-

  • Well prepared
  • Have faith in ourselves- “I Can do it.”
  • Have the blessings of teachers and parents.
  • Have faith in God.

4. NEVER COMPARE YOURSELF WITH OTHERS-

Success is the difference between your capability and your performance. So you have to compare yourself with your previous performance. Suppose you got 70% marks aim for 75%, got 80% aims for 85%. Never feel jealous, envious, if someone has got better marks. Try to improve and learn.

5 DO NOT BLAME ANYBODY-

If we do not achieve our target we start blaming our circumstances, parents, teachers etc. We should see how we can improve ourselves. What is the reason of our failure? We should not blame anyone for our failure. Complaining leads us to no where, it becomes a personality trait. It’s a hinderance in improving ourselves.

6. BE CONSISTENT-

If you work consistently for 21 days it becomes a habit. Suppose you study for 4 or 5 hrs daily for 21 days it becomes a habit. So be consistent like the tortoise and not like the hare who ran and went off to sleep.

We follow a study plan or timetable for one week and leave it, this is wrong. Consistency means hardwork for a long period of time. Success comes through sustained dedication for a long period of time.

To be consistent avoid distractions. Main distractions are –

T.V, friends, phone calls, movies, social media like Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp,  etc. The simplest way to concentrate is to keep away from distractions. Concentration means to be in the center and distraction means off the right track.

7. WORK HARD AS WELL AS SMART-

  • Read the whole lesson carefully, underline the important with a colored pen and then understand the subject matter. Attempt the questions at the back. Reading the whole lesson is very important.
  • Start your revision from the back, you have already done the first 2-3 chapters several times and you haven’t prepared the last chapters at all.
  • Pay more attention to the important parts of the chapter and pay less time to the unimportant.
  • Learn, write and practice. The more you write and practice your writing, speed, spellings everything will improve.
  • While practicing math’s, mark the difficult sums, practice them on the revision day. FOR MATHS MAKE A FORMULA COPY.
