Benefits Of House Plants

Plants that purify the air at home

Bamboo palm– Besides adding a tropical touch to your living room, the bamboo palm actually reduces the amount of formaldehyde which causes irritation to your nose, mouth and throat. It also reduces the amount of xylene, which can cause dizziness and headaches.

Tulsi- Tulsi is known as the Queen of herbs. It strengthens body immunity and fights infections. You can also get rid of kidney stones with the help of tulsi leaves.

Boston fern– It has the same effect as the Bamboo palm, bringing down levels of formaldehyde as well as xylene.

Snake plant– This plant is not only photogenic, it also helps to fight dizziness, headaches and nausea, caused by trichloroethylene-a substance found in paint and ink. Irritation to your nose and mouth, caused by xylene can also be reduced.

Spider plant– Just like spiders, this plant has a great value in nature. It can reduce the toxic formaldehyde-found in paper and synthetic fabrics-and also brings down levels of xylene.

Indoor plants that you can grow in your house

  • Areca palm– This leafy plant can be grown anywhere in the house in indirect sunlight. Make sure it is not exposed to direct sunlight, or the leafs will turn yellow. The plant is useful in filtering xylene and toluene from the air. It also works effectively as an effective humidifier.
  • Money plant– A money plant is one of the most common household plants. It is said that just like its name and the look of its leaves, the money plant contributes in increasing the finances of the house.

Since the leaves of money plant are heart-shaped, it is said that it brings love and happiness in the family. It also helps mend broken relationships and improves the relationships between the family members of the house.

The good part of a money plant is that though it requires adequate watering, it can still survive on days when you forget to water it. Still, make sure to water it twice in peak summers or once a day or alternate days in harsh winters.

  • Tulsi– Seen thriving even after little-to-no maintenance, this plant has a number of medicinal properties. In addition, it helps in purifying the air and improves air quality. It can be planted in simple pot. It requires regular sunlight, so the best place to keep this plant would be a sunny window. All you need do is water it regularly (but be sure not to over-water) and watch it thrive.
  • Spider plant– This lovely plant combats benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and xylene, a solvent use in leather, rubber and printing industries.
  • Snake plant– This plant is best suited for bath rooms since if filters out formaldehyde, which is commonly found in personal-care products. It is one of the top air-purifying plants identified by NASA. This plant is one of the easiest to grow and requires no extra attention. This plant can be neglected for weeks and will still give you long, fresh leaves. The only thing to keep in mind is that they can easily rot, so they need to be planted in free-draining soul. Quick fact: This plant is also called mother-in-law’s tongue or Saint George’s sword.
  • Weeping fig– This leafy plant helps against emissions from curtains, carpets and furniture. The weeping fig intially takes time to grow, but once it is in complete form, it can grow up to 10 feet. One thing you should keep in mind is not move this plant around too much-its leaves can shed easily. Place it in a bright, indirect light and let it stay there.

Health benefits of Areca palm-

  • Absorbs pollutants-Areca palm plant helps in absorbing indoor air pollutants like acetone, xylene, and toluene which are omitted from petroleum products, paints and wooden furniture.
  • Healthy lungs– Areca palm plants absorb harmful pollutants from indoor air and provide fresh air, thus help in minimizing upper respiratory tract diseases caused mainly because of toluene.
  • Strengthens nervous system– Areca palm provides fresh air, hence helps in improving the nervous system in children and stops necrosis, that is the sudden death of cells and other tissues of the body.
  • Proper develpment of children and fetus-Harmful gases like toluene and xylene etc cause development problems in children and fetus in pregnant women. The plant areca helps in minimizing these gases from the indoor environment.

Health benefits of Tulsi-

  • Reduces fever-Tulsi is an excellent antibiotic, germicidal, fungicidal, and disinfectant agent and very effectively protects our body from all sorts of bacterial, viral and fungal infections.
  • Helps with treatment of Asthma-Tulsi is very beneficial in the treatment of asthma since it relieves congestion and facilitates smoother breathing.
  • Prevents Heart diseases-A 2017 study published in journal throws light on the use of tulsi for chronic cardiovascular diseases. It contains Vitamin C and ther antioxidants which protect the heart from harmful effects of free radicals.
  • Reduces stress– Vitamin C and other antioxidants in holy basil apart from repairing damages done by free radicals, also minimizes the stress caused by these oxidants. Potassium in Tulsi also reduces blood pressure related stress by replacing sodium and loosening the tensed blood vessels.
  • Reduces risk of Kidney stones-Tulsi helps to reduce the uric acid level in the body, which is the main culprit as far as kidney stones are concerned. It also helps clean out the kidney through increased frequency of urination.
  • Relives headache– A headache is caused due to migraine, sinus, cough, cold or high blood pressure can be effectively controlled by the use of a single tulsi serving.
