Thyroid Disorders

Thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped endocrine gland of the body. It releases two hormones namely T3 and T4, which are responsible for growth, energy generation and metabolic processes of the body especially the heart and skeletal muscles and also our moods.

Normal blood levels

TSH – 0.35 – 4.94 uIU/ML

T3 – 0.64 – 1.52 ng/ML

T4 – 5 -12 ug/dl

Hypothyroidism (Myxoedema in adults and Cretinism in children)

T3 and T4 levels decrease in blood, TSH increases. Therefore, BMR (basal metabolic rate) decreases.

SYMPTOMS: Feeling cold when other people do not, constipation, muscular weakness, weight gain, depression or sadness, dry skin, easily tired, swelling of body which is non pitting, hoarseness of voice, puffy face, thickened hair.

Hyperthyroidism

T3 and T4 levels increase in blood, TSH reduces. Therefore, BMR (basal metabolic rate) increases.

SYMPTOMS: Weight Loss, Palpitation, Tremors, High Level of Anxiety.

HOMOEOPATHIC MEDICINES will help you to maintain normal thyroid levels. Take these medicines under the supervision of your homoeopathic doctor. But for total cure consult your homoeopathic physician personally.

HYPOTHYROIDISM :-

  1. Thyroidinum 3x
  2. Natrum mur 6x
  3. Pitutarinum 3x
  4. Calcarea carb
  5. Calcarea iod

HYPERTHYROIDISM :-

  1. Iodium
  2. Natrum mur
  3. Alfa Alfa Q
  4. Avena sativa Q

 

AYURVEDIC MEDICINES

Ayurvedic view point of Thyroid –  Imbalance of digestive fire and accumulation of toxins called Ama (Unwanted undigested material) in the body. पित्त बढ़ जाता है।

All these medicines are to be taken only for 1 month and then consult your Ayurvedic physician for further treatment.

Hypothyroidism

  1. Triphladya Guggulu – 2 tablets twice a day (chew before meals).
  2. Punarnavadi Kashaya – 3 tsp of medicine in 6 tsp water to be taken twice a day after meals. 
  3. Haritaki churn (for maintaining digestive fire) – 1/2 tsp with warm waterat bed time.
  4. Treatment for Underlying symptoms (Dosage depends upon chronicity and body type)

Note:- Triphladya Guggulu (त्रिफलदया गुग्गलू ) or Kaishore Guggulu (केशोर गुग्गलू) can be taken by everyone with thyroid symptoms only with no previous history of hypertension for a course of 1 month. It is observed to eradicate the minor thyroid errors. TSH, T3, T4 comes under normal range.

Hyperthyroidism

  1. Drakshadi kashay (द्राक्षादि कषाय) – 3 tsp of medicine in 6 tsp water 2 times a day, after meals.
  2. Mahatikta ghrita  (महातिक्त घृत)- 1 tsp mixed with 1 cup of warm milk.
  3. Kshirbala taila (क्षीरबला तैल) is for body massage.

 

PRANAYAM

  1. Ujjai pranayama is most powerful. 5 rounds once a day.

2. Bhramari pranayam work wonders. 5 rounds once a day.

YOG ASANA

Sarvang asana (Shoulder stand pose)–  Those who can’t do Sarvangasana, they can do Vipareet karani (Legs up the Wall) asana.

DIET PLAN

Hypothyroidism Diet Plan

Early Morning – 1 glass of warm water with 1/2 piece of lemon.

First Meal – Green tea + Roasted flax seeds, Fox nuts (Makhana), Walnuts, Almonds (6 pieces), Pumpkin seeds 1 tsp (Any two of them)

Breakfast – Oats Upma, Daliya , Poha , Rice Idli , Dhokla , Chilla (2 parts of oats + 1 part of suji + 1 part of besan+ vegetables+curd) , Vermicelli (jave) with veggies , Sprouts , Fat free milk (Toned milk).

Mid Meal – Any one seasonal fruit, Coconut water

Lunch – Salad (cucumber+carrot+beetroot+tomato+onion), Rice (if possible use brown rice, and rice serving should be restricted to one small bowl) , Roti/Chapati (it is better to take multigrain flour if possible) , Dal , Curd , Vegetables .

Evening Snack – Green tea, Butter milk or Soup, Roasted Channa

Dinner– Roti with Lauki sabji or Torai ki sabji.

Post Dinner – 1 Glass of warm water  or 1 cup of milk and 15 to 20 minutes walk.

List of Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s

  1. Drink lots of warm water or plain water.
  2. Use Iodised salt
  3. Take Ginger or Turmeric tea
  4. Coconut water
  5. Fermented food like Idli, Dosa, Dokla.
  6. Eggs- Whole eggs are best, as much of their iodine and selenium are found in the yolk, while the whites are full of protein.
  7. All seafood
  8. Fruits especially berries, bananas, oranges, guava, papaya.
  9. Gluten-free grains and seeds like rice, buckwheat (kuttu), quinoa, chia seeds and flax seeds.
  10. All dairy products including milk, paneer and curd.

Don’ts

  1. Alcohol, Caffeine
  2. Processed food
  3. Refined sugar, Refined flour
  4. Table salt
  5. Fried food
  6. Soft drinks
  7. Soy foods like tofu, tempeh, edamame, etc.
  8. Certain vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, etc.
  9. Fruits and starchy plants like sweet potatoes, peaches, strawberries, etc.
  10. Nuts and seeds: millet, pine nuts, peanuts, etc.
  11. Soyabean oil, Peanut oil,  All Refined Oil.

Hyperthyroidism Diet Plan

  1. Diet is same as in hypothyroidism.
  2. The only thing to restrict is salt consumption, especially white salt which contains iodine.
  3. We can take Himalayan pink salt or sendha namak, Kala namak any rock salt.
  4. Avoid baked foodstuffs
