Brain is the computing system of the body. It receives signals, directs commands and controls our mental, physical and intellectual being. Our brain keeps us going. So here’s how to keep our brain going-
In our body, there is an active constant wear and tear process i.e. degeneration and regeneration which keeps us going from our first to last breath. It applies to the brain as well. However, if the brain doesn’t get the raw material it requires, the regeneration process suffers.
These are the prerequisite to make your brain stay healthy!
- FOOD FOR THOUGHT– The brain growth, physically is very rapid from the moment of the birth from the age of two years. The essentials of the good brain health are-
Nuts and oil seeds-
- All seeds are a treasure trove of healthy minerals, Vitamins B, folic acid, iron, zinc, Vitamin E and healthy proteins. So having a handful of almonds, walnuts, peanuts, chilgoza, hazelnuts and pistachio ensure an active and smart brain. You can also grind them together adding a few sunflower and flax seeds to the powder.
- Sesame seeds (til) are an excellent source of calcium especially during adolescence.
- Staying away from unhealthy oils e.g. refined oils, adulterated oils and excess saturated fats, is a healthy option to keep brain lethargy at bay. Use healthy oils such as mustard oils, sunflower oils, olive oils.
- Antioxidants– The brain works non-stop. There is high level of work and regeneration. Antioxidants ensure cleansing and detoxifying of the free radicals produced. Fresh fruits, fresh vegetables and green tea (without milk and sugar) are wonderful antioxidants providers.
- Good Proteins– Lentils like sprouted dals, rajma, safed Chana, sprouted kala Chana, Soya milk, egg, lean fish should be included in the daily diet.
- Healthy carbs– Starving (भूखे रहना) and gluttony (ज़रुरत से ज़्यादा खाना) both makes the brain dull. The brain uses glucose as fuel. Good carbs include fruits, dry fruits like raisins dates, apricots and figs; whole grains like Dalia, barley, whole corn and millets. दाल, सब्जी, रोटी और मौसम की सब्जी सबसे अच्छा भोजन है।
- बेजर का आटा जिसमें चना 20% + जौ 20% + गेहूं 60% का ratio होता है, सबसे पौष्टिक है।
- Green leafy vegetables such as Palak, maithi, bathua, sarso, coriander etc. are a rich source of iron. Iron is needed for the making of blood in our body. If the quality of blood is good, our brain works faster.
2. Herbs for intelligence– These include yastimadhu, gaduchi, Shankhapushpi, Mandukaparni, Chitrak root, Brahmi, Vacha, haritaki, Kustha, and Shatavari.
3. Breathe right– Oxygen is the vital for brain health. Aerobic exercise, pranayama, dancing, active playing, all of these contribute to lung expansion ensuring oxygen reaches the brain completely.
4. Meditate- Satsang, meditation and focusing on the breath absolutely relaxes, calms and rejuvenates the brain cells getting rid of all the negativity caused by excess of the thought parade.
5. Mental exercise– It is said, “To make the mind sharp – READ, WRITE AND RECALL.” Challenging, enjoyable problem solving puzzles like crossword, Sudoku etc., learning new languages, learning a new skill all these create a very healthy and active brain.
6. Yoga/ physical exercise- Physical exercise promotes blood circulation to the brain, releasing feel good hormones endorphins and helping in the regeneration process.
7. Stay away– Lack of sleep, too much anxiety and stress, food and alcohol addictions, over medication thought clutter, eating junk.
Indulging in a positive life style and healthy routine works wonders for the brain. Our brain forms 2 percent of the total body weight but uses 20 percent of the body’s energy producing 70,000 thoughts every day.
Eating right, staying positive and exercising well is the key to an active and healthy brain.
