Commitment- A Complete Value System

Once while Guru Dronacharya was training Pandavas in archery in a forest, he asked all five of them to aim at a bird’s eye that was sitting on one of the branches of a tree. Obeying the master’s order, all five of them stood alert in position to shoot arrow at the bird’s eye from their bow.

Before ordering them to shoot, Dronacharya asked Yudhishthir, the eldest of the five brothers, “What do you see?”. He replied,

“I see the blue sky, the tree, its fruits, leaves, branches and the bird.

Guru Dronacharya asked him to wait. He then asked the same question to Bhim, Arjuna, Nakul and Sahdev. All gave similar answers as Yudhishthir except for Arjuna. Arjuna’s reply was-

“I see the bird’s eye.” Dronocharya asked him to shoot and he was successful.

Arjuna’s commitment to aim at bird’s eye was so strong that he could not see anything else. He was completely focused and thus he succeeded.

A steadfast ‘commitment’ has the ingredients of a complete value system. We can look at it with the help of the small story narrated above. Qualities that are perceived in the story are:-

1. Aim / लक्ष्य

Selection and maintenance of aim is very important. Once an objective is carefully selected a person remains steadfast on it till its completion. Without an aim, all his efforts will come to naught.

2. Sincerity/ सच्चाई

A person will make a commitment only if he is sincere about doing that task.

3. Devotion/ भक्ति भाव

Devotion to the cause and the organization is important. Also devotion, love and affection to the superiors, colleagues and subordinates/children should not be forgotten. This quality enhances the reliability of an individual tremendously.

4. Loyalty/ निष्ठा

A committed person will remain loyal and steadfast towards his objective and his organization, even under stress and under adverse circumstances.

5. Integrity/ ईमानदारी

Honesty is the basis of all the qualities in an individual. Without integrity a person will not be true to his cause, or to himself. A commitment means that the person will carry out the assigned task truthfully, whether anyone is watching over him or not. A truthful person will always be very reliable.

6. Hard work/ परिश्रम

A commitment will automatically lead a person to work hard for its achievements. Personal comfort and interests will be relegated for the completion of the task undertaken.

7. Focused/ ध्यान केन्द्रित होना

With a commitment on his hands, a person will remain focused for its completion. He may have other tasks to do, but he will give priority to his commitment and never lose sight of it.

8. Challenge/ चुनौती

A commitment poses a challenge to a person, that he can do the job that he has committed. Such challenges build up the resolve of an individual.

9. Sacrifice/ त्याग

A person will sacrifice his interest for keeping his word, after all that is what a commitment is. Lord ‘Rama’ in our epics went to a great length of trouble to keep his word

Raghu kul reet sada chali aayee, pran jayen par vachan na jayee.

रघु कुल रीत सदा चली आयी , प्राण जाएँ पर वचन न जाई

10. Consideration/ विचार करना

A commitment shows the consideration that a person has towards another person or organization, so as to get bound to it.

Mentor says that we can fulfill any commitment only when we have love in our heart for our purpose in life. It is due to love that our mind gets single tracked and there is clarity of goal in our mind. Love is such a powerful energy that it focuses our mind on our goal and helps to work hard for it. All the above said values are imbibed naturally in love.
