There is similarity between the universe, and the human body. All the entities in the universe, and all the activities of the universe are similar and in coordination with that of the living beings (human beings).
Winters are dormant in nature when viewed superficially, but deep down inside the nature/ universe is saving its energy and preparing itself for the upcoming year. The plants shed their leaves in autumn, thus saving their energy to focus on the growth, strength and expansion of their roots.
Likewise, our bodies act by strengthening our systems in winters and prepare it for the upcoming year. Let’s give our systems a helping hand by providing them the favorable situations.
Ayurveda, the science of life, suggests an ideal winter platter to give our systems the required boost. Knowledge from ancient and modern researches of Ayurveda are presented here.
- Diet that is warm, light and dry is best suitable for this weather.
- Accumulation of mucus in our system, in throat or passage of mucus with stools is a sign of taking too much of Kapha- promoting Diet.
- Though, all 6 six tastes (sweet madhur, salty namkeen, khatta amla, pungent katu/ teekha, bitter kadwa, astringent kashay/kasaila) should be taken in balance, 3 tastes for consumption during this season are predominantly adviced –
- Pungent/ teekha (ginger, bell pepper, black pepper, onion, garlic, hing, raddish )
- Bitter/ kadwa (karela, turmeric, aloe vera, coffee, )
- Astringent/ kasaila (kachha kela, anaar, chana dal, matra chana, bhindi, turmeric, sprouts, raddish)
- Jeera, hara dhaniya, hing, adrak, ajwain, daal chini, laung, methi, ilaichi – these are a mix of all 6 tastes which can be added to daily regime.
- Vitamin B & C can be taken in excess.
GRAINS-
- Rice
- Barley – jau
- Millets – bajra
- Amaranth – chaulai
- Dalia – broken wheat
- Buckwheat – kuttu
- Oats
- Quinoa – To be eaten freshly cooked, and warm. Avoid reheating
LEGUMES-
All legumes in this season are easily digestible, which should be ideally avoided in other seasons –
- Kidney beans
- White grams
- Urad Dal
VEGETABLES-
- Beet roots
- Carrots
- Spinach
- Cauliflower
- Cabbage
- Pumpkin
- Bottle gourd
- Round gourd
- Bathua
- Methi
- All the seasonal green vegetables are good in winters.
- Raw greens should be avoided. Raw Vegetable salad should be avoided.
- Cooked and spiced greens are very good for the digestive system in winters.

- Amla
- Apples
- Bananas
- Grapes
- Pineapple
- Cheeku – Sapodillo Plum
- Orange
- Winter-season berries
- One may have a sensitive throat. In that case, the citrus fruits may be consumed only on a sunny day, while sitting in sunlight.
- One should consume any one fruit from the list before consuming the meals.
- Amla is the only fruit that can be consumed anytime during the day, before meals, after meals, even in mid of the meals.

- Sesame seeds -Til
- Cashew Nuts- kaju
- Walnuts – akhrot
- Almonds – badaam
- Pistachio – Pista
- Currant – Munakka
- Black Currant – Kali kishmish
- Figs – anjeer
- Dates – khajur
MILK-
- Dairy Milk – Cow, Buffalo, Goat etc
- Nut Milk – Almond, Cashew, , Hazelnut, Walnut, Peanut
DAIRY PRODUCTS-
- Milk
- Ghee
- Cottage Cheese
COOKING OILS-
- Ghee
- Sesame oil
- Mustard Seed Oil
- Sunflower Oil
VEGETABLES SOUPS & STEWS-
- Moong Dal Soup
- Mixed vegetable soup
- Tomato carrot beetroot
- Broccoli soup
- Mushroom soup
- Sweetcorn soup
Other Winter Delicacies:
- Tea spiced with Black Cardamom
Sweets like gajar ka halwa, til ke ladoo, gajak, Pinni- Winter special Dry Fruit Ladoo (can add a bit of ashwagandha in it) - Chyawanprash
- Morning Winter sun
- Milk boiled with kesar or Turmeric or chhuara- to be consumed at night
- For Kids: Avoid giving them brandy or any alcohol to keep them warm. Instead give them 1-2 drops of shilajeet (available in ayurvedic stores) with ½ cup of milk.
- Curd is usually avoided in all the other seasons, but nominal amounts can be consumed during this weather, since the weather prepares our bodies for digesting heavy foods.
- Best season to gain weight and best season to loose weight.
To be Avoided or taken in minimal quantities-
A lot of cakes, pies, sweets and puddings during the winters may cause you to have congestion in chest, as this causes in accumulation of bad kapha. This bad kapha tends to melt in the upcoming spring season and cause disease. Therefore staying in moderation is highly recommended.
LIFESTYLE ADDITIONS
- 10 – 20 minutes warm up before pranayama & exercises. Warm up before Pranayma prevents catching cold.
- Agnisaar kriya
- Udavartan – dry scrubbing
–(Cosmetic Relevance) Ayurvedic O3 Scrubbing
–(Dosha Relevance) Balances Kapha
- Avoid sleeping during day time. It promotes kapha.
- Avoid super oily foods.
