HOW TO GROW OLD GRACEFULLY

A 16 years old new sadhak saw Guruji’s active life daily routine from 5 am to 11pm. Curiously she asked Guru ji – How old are you ? With a smile Guru ji said – “I am 60 years young.”

Am I “16 years old or 60 years young” ? Let us ask this question to ourself.

Reflect on this question quite frequently. It’s important. As it will give a deep insight for “building the new” to have a more energetic, cheerful, productive, vibrant, blissful, fruitful life ahead. To grow gracefully in life we have to bring a shift in our life.

Here are 16 tips for “building the new” and “bringing a shift” in our life to embrace aging gracefully-

  1. Have a higher purpose of life and focusing on it : Human life is very precious. The ultimate goal of our life is DIVINE LOVE (Bhagwat prem) and SELFLESS SERVICE (Yagyarth Jeevan).
  2. Nurturing Divine love bond with God : This entire world belongs to God. Keep remembering Him with a loving heart by saying-

O Lord! I am yours and you are mine.

O Lord! I may never forget you.

O Lord ! May I feel your grace always and my heart may be grateful always.

  1. As the company so the colour : Satsang (Holy company) is the best company. In company of our Spiritual Master we receive complete knowledge of Bhakti-Yog, Gyan-Yog, Karm-Yog with experience and keep growing gracefully. Also, we need to surround ourself with like minded positive happy beings (like- human beings, plants, pets).

  2. Attitude of gratitude : When our day begins with a gratitude prayer, we get a positive mindset. When we are grateful to our Satguru (Spiritual Master), to God, to our parents, to our teachers, to mother Nature and everyone around us we receive their blessings which makes a protective shield (सुरक्षा चक्र) around us.

  3. Lifestyle changes : Change is inevitable in life. It’s a natural process that with aging we experience a lot of changes in our personality. So, we need to work on ourself and maintain a healthy routine (Satvic life style). Live well to age well.

  4. Enjoy balanced diet – Let us try to increase satvic food items in our diet, which includes fruits, Vegetables, juices, nuts, milk and milk product, etc.. Also, we need to drink sufficient amount of water sip by sip from time to time.

  5. Exercise regularly and practise good posture : Yoga, pranayam, walking, jogging, surynamaskar, sunbathing, deep breathing, dancing, playing outdoor games help us to resume an active life style. When we exercise regularly well being harmones are secreted in our body.
  6. Frequent rest and proper Sleep : Normally, with age we tend to go to sleep early, as a result automatically we get up early. So, we can relax for 20-30 minutes after breakfast and take a nap after lunch. It’s very refreshing.

  7. Enriching life of people around ourself : God has given us everything not only for ourself but to share it with everyone. When sharing (Giving) is selfless (Nishkam) it brings joy in our life as well as joy vibrates in the entire universe.

  8. Close to nature is close to God : Spending time in our garden or on the terrace or in our balcony is a beautiful way to enjoy nature. Twice or thrice a year visiting a holy place on Himalayas or near a river or a sea (Satsang Shivir, Tirth Yatra) for 7 to 15 days is a Divine experience.
  9. Stay active : There are some beautiful activities which are very helpful in growing gracefully to lead a healthy, happy, productive life like- Meditation, chanting, reading holy scripture and other self-help books, writing, music, nurturing new hobbies, starting childhood hobbies once again. These meaningful activities are very rejuvenating.

  10. Regular health check up : After 50 years of age it’s important to get a whole body checkup annually. If any health issue is there instead of panic learn to lead a fearless life by being alert and aware. Maintaining oral hygiene and visiting our dentist is a healthy practise.

  11. Appreciate and encourage younger generation : This quality helps us in nurturing strong bond with our next generation and passing values to them with our life’s example. Spending quality time with children below 10 years by playing with them and sharing stories is very energizing.

  12. Embrace simplicity and smile a lot : Let us learn to accept physical changes in our body like grey hair, wrinkles on skin etc.

“Simple living, high thinking”  is still a very healthy practise to adopt in our daily life. Being alive — in mind, body and spirit is important.  A Smile helps to solve or dissolve many problems in life. So, let our internal organs smile…. every body cell may smile.  Be joyful like a child.

  1. Having positive attitude towards life : A 93 years wise grand Maa in our family is still active and vibrant by saying these positive affirmations-
  • I am strong.
  • I am healthy.
  • I am happy.
  • I am ocean of love.
  • I am peaceful.
  1. Universal family : Feeling that whole universe is my family (Vasudev kutumbkam) makes us loving and loveable. We travel to new places and meet new people. This gives new experiences which enrich our life. We learn to love, care and share.

CONCLUSION : Wisdom shared by our Satguru ji (Spiritual Master) in form of these 16 tips are worth practising to be 16 years young at heart at the age of 60.
